Our Nature Table

We love our Nature Table! We have had one on and off for over 6 years now. It is so great to have a centralized place for the kids to place anything that they bring in from outside in nature.

It has become a family tradition to start a new nature table every season and watch it grow over the months. The change of the seasons always inspires us to begin a new Nature Table theme.

Here is the beginning of our Autumn Nature Table that the kids created today. I usually hang a new colorful silk that reflects the season as a backdrop and the kids excitedly run around outside finding objects to start it. Devin's single"rule" about our Nature Table is that only things from nature can be placed on it. We all agreed to this years ago and everyone undertands and respects our sacred space to honor nature in this way. The kids have added bees hives, acorns, flowers and leaves to bring the wonders of nature into our everyday lives.

Over the months of each season, our Nature Table becomes a unique, one of a kind natural collage that grows and changes so so beautifully to create an amazing display from nature. Everyone that comes to visit us comments on it.

I can't wait to see what it looks like by winter!

Dancing on Sparkles

I am amazed at the intense emotions that I feel everyday from being Dakota's (Tiff's) Mom. Watching her spirit grow, feeling her incredible Joy and often times, incredible frustration, I have learned so much from her. She is my greatest teacher at this point in my life. (My first couple of years as a Mom, Devin was. I always tell him that he taught me how to be a Mom and because I loved it so much I had 3 more kids!)

I can't wait to see what Ivy & Orion teach me about myself and the World over the years. I have so much anticipation. So much Joy in my heart looking toward our future together as a family. So many more incredible, exciting years together! This is just the beginning of our life as a complete family. I am so grateful to be *Here, Now*

One way in which Tiff *Sparkles* so brightly is when she is dancing. Her eyes seem to be in a such a peaceful place. She loves me to watch her and I do. so happily! I am mesmerized by my daughter as she dances around. As I watch her I think about how perfect she is in all of her sensitivity, in all of her intensity. She doesn't need to change. Nor do I need to focus on changing her, or train her to fit into anyone else's box. I am so grateful that she is able to be ~who she is~ every single day, all day long. She is celebrated, honored and so loved.

Yes, she loves to dance, but she doesn't need or want "dancing lessons". She wants to just be Dakota and twirl and jump and be free to be herself and dance to her own music in a way that feels good and beautiful to her.

Today is a rainy day. It's a good day to dance.

Stepping Up Our Art Gallery

I am always looking for new and interesting ways of displaying my children's artwork. Today I was walking up the stairs to the second floor of our old farmhouse and realized that it would be a great place to display some of their masterpieces!
The kids recently did some stamping with their grandmother and this was the perfect place to display it, along with a few other recent creations.
I love to surround my family with things that we have all made by hand. It brings a certain warmth and Joy into our home.

Why Unschooling Doesn't Come Naturally

I was thrilled to see that one of my articles is featured on the homepage of The Natural Child Project!

It's really an honor to be a resource for so many coming to the Radical Unschooling Life. Sometimes my life seems so surreal. I love this path of Peace and Joy with my children so much. I am so grateful to be an advocate helping others also. What more could I ask from life?

Our Day With Fox News

When we got home from Texas we were contacted by Becky Diamond of Fox News. She wanted our family for a Primetime News Story about Unschooling. Our family is going to be featured in a segment along with John Taylor Gatto.

We discussed everything with the kids, as we always do, and we decided as a family that we would like to take part in this opportunity. Although the segment will be short, Becky came and filmed our family for about 6 hours. We had a really fun day, doing what we always do, living and learning together. I was also interviewed alone about Unschooling philosophy.

We all had an exciting day and the kids learned so much about film and how the News puts together a story. Here are a few pictures of our day with Fox News.

Just another day in the life of the Sparkling Martins.

Making a Lean-to

When we got back from Texas, Devin said that he missed our forest. (We live on 43 acres). He said he loved the city, but he wanted to create something out in nature.

So, today, Devin and I took on the task of making a "Lean-To", which is a shelter in the woods. He saw one on the show "Man vs. Wild" a while ago and has wanted to create one ever since. So we jumped online and researched how to do it. We gathered sticks together and created this interesting forest shelter.

This project was so much fun! I was in charge of tying everything together while he laid all of the sticks in the way he wanted. I love when he and I start building something like this together. It takes me a few minutes to "get into it", but once I do, we are so in the moment and work together perfectly when we have a task at hand. We are really supportive of one another and if something isn't working the other person encourages and vice-versa.

I love these times together. He loves that I am not afraid to "get dirty", in his words.

Discussion Learning

There are so many labels for "Unschooling". There are just as many opinions about the term. Some love it and compare the word to "uncoiling" or "undo-ing". Some folks don't like the fact that it focuses on what we don't do and not on what we actually do.

I've heard labels such as Life Learning, or Organic Learning, or Delight-driven Learning.

Our truth is, that we consider ourselves all of these things at one time of another. Sometimes we are "delight-driven" exploring something that brings us such Joy. Sometimes we are "surprise-learners" because we had no idea that amazing learning has taken place within us until a later time. I consider myself an "Impetuous Learner" in the way that I passionately take new things on and learn so much from them. We are also "Unschoolers" at times, especially when I see the school bus drive by our house in the morning and my heart fills with gratitude for the lives we have.

Our labels ebb and flow and grow. They change from day to day. In the end, labels are only words. They could never describe the depth and breadth if everything our life embodies. It's okay though, I find labels useful at times and I have a love/hate relationship with them, as many of us do living this life.

When we were in Texas, Joe really wanted to see where JFK was assassinated. He had learned so much about it... not in school...... but from the hit TV show, the X-Files. He had to see the famous "X". On our way there driving on the twisted multi-layered highway we discussed who JFK was. From there we discussed the presidency and which presidents had been shot and by who and why. We discussed the many theories connected to the assassination. The kids were enthralled.

Questions from the kids continued to bubble up, just like when you first pour soda in a glass. The discussion bounced back and forth in the min-van quicker and more energetically than a ping-pong game. You could feel the interest from us all, the absorbing and processes and the learning.

Discussions are one of our best learning tools. We joyfully share information and answer questions. We talk a lot. We share a lot. We enjoy these discussions with our kids, not because we are hoping they learn from them, but because we love this time connecting and sharing. We love the feeling of being so utterly *Present* with them. The eye contact, the touching, the natural flow of an interesting conversation. We just love it!

Here is Joe standing on the famous "X". It represents so much more than a moment in history to me. It represents how we learn. Through interests and discussion and connection.

Free To Be

Watching Tiff *Sparkle* at the conference was so awesome. She was totally herself and was embraced by everyone there. She and I were flipping through the conference schedule and noticed that there was a "Leonardo Da Vinci Invention Contest". I asked her if she would be interested and she said "Yes.

We walked down to the main floor and picked up our bag of invention materials. Everyone gets the exact same materials to create their invention with. Then conference attendees vote on 100 inventions and the winners from 3 categories get a prize.

Tiff created a "Barbie Doll Clothes Rack" to hang Barbie clothes. She did a really great job creating her invention. It was quite challenging, but something she found great pleasure in. She wanted to win so badly.

The last night of the Conference, they announced the winners of the Contest. My heart swelled when they announced "Tiffy" as the winner in the "Most Useful" category! She was so excited and shyly, but proudly, walked up on stage to claim her prize. Everyone clapped and cheered for her. I smile thinking of that special moment in her life.

Today she shares that winning that prize was one of her favorite things about the conference. It was so beautiful watching her up on stage... so proud... so confident. I am so grateful for this Conference. It was so important to all of us.

My Bliss

My favorite aspect of the Rethinking Education conference was hosting six different sessions. The names of the sessions were:

The Journey From Attachment Parenting to Radical Unschooling

Growth Through Our Backsteps

Trusting the Universe

Nurturing Our Children's Passions

Respectful Partnerships

Finding Your Inner Advocate

One thing I didn't expect when leading sessions was how much I would learn myself. It was great noticing the common thread in the Unschooling community. Connecting with the fears and joys that many parents feel enabled me to become a better advocate myself. It was truly an incredible experience that I am so grateful to have had.

It is truly my *Bliss*.

Enjoying the Talent Show

The talent show was one of the highlights of our conference experience among many other things. It was nice to sit, relax and enjoy a drink while watching all of these amazing Unschooled kids on stage, so confident and passionate.

Here I am sitting with Barb, my dear friend (and conference founder and producer) as we enjoyed the show.

The Suite Life of the Sparkling Martin's

When we arrived at the hotel in Texas we were greeted with open arms and lots of hugs. I felt like I was finally *home*. We dragged ourselves up to our Suite and relaxed. We ordered room service and chilled in the hot tub.

Here are some pictures of our Suite and the view from one of our enormous picture windows.

Rethinking Education Conference Trip

We just returned home from the most incredible, awe-inspiring week in Texas. The Rethinking Education Conference was the most amazing Unschooling Conference that I have ever attended. It was so well organized with so much to do. It was the most fun that the kids have ever had at an event like this.

The overall message that I took from the conference was "Freedom". The freedom, rights and respect that all children deserve. The Joyful energy at the hotel was absolutely intoxicating. I loved being there and meeting all of the amazing families and *truly free* children.
Here we are on the plane to Texas!

Riding the Vibe

The law of attraction is so amazing! Today I rode the wave of friendship, as I talked to and ran into so many friends! I saw 4 different past Doula clients at the store today!

Also, I talked to my friend Jan Hunt, who gave me a call to let me know that her book, The Unschooling Unmanual will contain one of my articles in the German translation! The German publisher chose my article out of several to replace one that they aren't going to have in the German version. Very cool. She also told me that she is adding my YouTube videos to The Natural Child Project website. Sweet!

Then, I talked to my friend-dude, Scott Noelle to wish him luck on his upcoming Live and Learn gig. It's really funny, but we are both flying out of airports on opposite ends of the country at the same exact time on Wednesday. He said that our planes will probably pass eachother in the sky with us flying to the Rethinking Education Conference at the same time. I told him I would wave to him as we fly by. ;) I wish we could be at one of the conferences together! Maybe next year.

Finally, this evening, my sweet friend Suzanne Arms, who wrote "Immaculate Deception" among other birth related books, called to say hello, and to ask me if I would be on her Board of Directors of her organization, Birthing The Future. They actually have a documentary coming out on PBS soon about birth. It was so nice to connect with her and talk birth.

Here is a poem by my dear friend Suzanne, that I love so much:

If we hope to create a non-violent world where respect and kindness
replace fear and hatred

We must begin with how we treat each other
at the beginning of life.

For that is where our deepest patterns are set.
From these roots grow fear and alienation

~or love and trust.
