Our Day With Fox News

When we got home from Texas we were contacted by Becky Diamond of Fox News. She wanted our family for a Primetime News Story about Unschooling. Our family is going to be featured in a segment along with John Taylor Gatto.
We discussed everything with the kids, as we always do, and we decided as a family that we would like to take part in this opportunity. Although the segment will be short, Becky came and filmed our family for about 6 hours. We had a really fun day, doing what we always do, living and learning together. I was also interviewed alone about Unschooling philosophy.
We all had an exciting day and the kids learned so much about film and how the News puts together a story. Here are a few pictures of our day with Fox News.
Just another day in the life of the Sparkling Martins.

Making a Lean-to
When we got back from Texas, Devin said that he missed our forest. (We live on 43 acres). He said he loved the city, but he wanted to create something out in nature. So, today, Devin and I took on the task of making a "Lean-To", which is a shelter in the woods. He saw one on the show "Man vs. Wild" a while ago and has wanted to create one ever since. So we jumped online and researched how to do it. We gathered sticks together and created this interesting forest shelter.
This project was so much fun! I was in charge of tying everything together while he laid all of the sticks in the way he wanted. I love when he and I start building something like this together. It takes me a few minutes to "get into it", but once I do, we are so in the moment and work together perfectly when we have a task at hand. We are really supportive of one another and if something isn't working the other person encourages and vice-versa.
I love these times together. He loves that I am not afraid to "get dirty", in his words.

Free To Be

My Bliss

My favorite aspect of the Rethinking Education conference was hosting six different sessions. The names of the sessions were:
The Journey From Attachment Parenting to Radical Unschooling
Growth Through Our Backsteps
Trusting the Universe
Nurturing Our Children's Passions
Respectful Partnerships
Finding Your Inner Advocate
One thing I didn't expect when leading sessions was how much I would learn myself. It was great noticing the common thread in the Unschooling community. Connecting with the fears and joys that many parents feel enabled me to become a better advocate myself. It was truly an incredible experience that I am so grateful to have had.

The Suite Life of the Sparkling Martin's

When we arrived at the hotel in Texas we were greeted with open arms and lots of hugs. I felt like I was finally *home*. We dragged ourselves up to our Suite and relaxed. We ordered room service and chilled in the hot tub.
Here are some pictures of our Suite and the view from one of our enormous picture windows.
