Three of my four kids weaned between age 5 and 5 1/2 years. :-) The most precious two years of my life (so far) were when I tandem nursed my two children who were spaced only three years a part. I know what you mean about the older one nursing as much as the baby! :-) What an amazing gift to both ourselves and our children. Btw, it was great to meet Devin and Joe last weekend. You wake up during the night *anyway.* Could be anything--you drooled on your pillow and have to flip it over, you suddenly have to pee, you heard a funny noise, or whoever's in bed with you (if anyone is) just turned over in your direction, flopped out an arm and hit you on the head.

We do this anyway whether we want to or not. So what's the big deal if we have to do it for our kids? I should think that'd be an even *better* reason.

It's good to see someone else who nursed a child older than four. Once we were past about 5 months, I learned to tend to her at night without hardly waking up at all--MANY mornings I couldn't remember how many times she'd nursed, if at all. She has essentially never woken up at night (except one or two nights we prodded her awake to make sure her fever wasn't too high) because I'm always there (or close by) to offer mommy milk. My extended family still doesn't 'get' this--that she's basically slept through the night since 6 weeks old (or earlier but my brain is foggy) because if I am right there, she has no need to regain consciousness to get what she wants. I get more sleep than any other mother I know because I never had to get up to attend to her! I imagine it would be more night waking for me if I had another nursling to attend to simultaneously though.

I nursed my twins until they were just over 2 year...

I nursed my twins until they were just over 2 years old. That was one of my favorite things about having kids. The closeness we shared when we had "leches" now they are 6 and I think my son would still be nursing if I let him. The great thing is I think because we nursed we have this special bond they still love to cuddle with me like we would when they would nurse. It's a great feeling. Thanks for the memories.

my daughter nursed 'til my milk dried up when i wa...

my daughter nursed 'til my milk dried up when i was pregnant w/ my son...she got almost 4.5 years of mama milk. just one day of not nursing much and whammo, it was gone. & i am a hyperlactive mama...it was tough but she went w/ it as did i...once my son was born we tried nursing again (by then she was 5) & it just felt so odd to me...probably since we hadn't nursed for months on end...i did pump some milk for her though and she loved that. at 6 she has begged to nurse or touched my breasts and i just couldn't stand her 'on' them. sad...but true. i love nursing my babies and i also can't imagine a night w/out waking thruout the night many a time to nurse my babies & also get to check in w/ my kids. :O) thanks for posting this dayna. i would really like someone around here to take pics of ME!
