Like Father, Like Son

Devin stays up late with us after the other kids fall asleep. We love our one on one time with him watching movies and eating late night snacks.
We all get really punchy late at night and I can't tell you how many funny memories we have in the wee hours of the morning.
The other night I was cleaning the kitchen and Joe and Devin came in looking like this. I just about died laughing... I had to post a picture of them.
I love my hairy men!

I have a question. We've decided to start letting our son (6yo) stay up as late as he wants, because we realized that he wouldn't learn how to listen to his body's signals if someone else was always telling him when to sleep. We're new to RULoA. He is extremely creative, and seems to suddenly need to create as soon as the lights go out! Unfortunately he hasn't respected the one limit we've set, which is: stay in your room after lights-out. We don't care what he does in there, but we want grownup time. Heaven forbid we should use the time for sex. I am talking about such mundane things as work, or maybe enjoying a tv show together, or creating art or whatever (we are all 3 creative), or just being uninterrupted. Since our son has never learned to be in the same room with us without STOPPING us and disrupting whatever we might be doing, we have been holding fast to this bedtime rule. Unfortunately it leads to horrible conflict and he says we don't love him.

The question is this: if I am with him all day (we are HSers), answering his every request for play, and then after lights-out we're supposed to (I assume, under RULoA) never say no or be separate, when to we get to do the things we need and want to do? I am a firm believer in Boundaries. He is a very sensitive child and knows when I am stressed or wanting to cry or bang my head against the wall, and having no downtime is conducive to that.

Thanks for listening.

I have a side business which has just plummeted because my child has not learned boundaries and when I work at home it is just not honored.

Hi. Me again. I left that last comment and was in the process of rushing out the door, as hubby brought back the car and I had only 1 hour to go out and run errands before he needed it again to be someplace. A little harried. I know how selfish and cranky the post sounded. I wish I were as nice as you, Dayna, so full of love. Love as a starting-point. Having been raised with criticism as a starting-point, I am often quite not the sunshiney person. But I am trying!! Tonight I am trying to be as sunshiney as possible so I will see things in a different light.
