Learning About Photography

Today Dakota and I took on a very interesting project. We wanted to learn how photographs were created. We took out a kit which contained sun-sensitive paper. Dakota placed several items of her choice on the paper. Then we took the paper outside in the sun for about 30 minutes.
When we took it in we rinsed the paper and soaked it for about 10 minutes. Little by little the images of the items Dakota placed on the paper appeared!

It was such an interesting, cool project! She and I learned so much about the process of photography! I love learning alongside my children! The memories we create everyday exploring our interests are one of the best aspects of our lives together.

Devin's Engine

Last Christmas Devin received an Engine to build in a very detailed kit. Shortly after receiving it he put about half of it together and then lost interest. It sat on a shelf in our craft room for about 10 months.

The beauty of living this amazing life is that the kids have the freedom to start and stop projects and interests without penalty. They are able to allow their interests to flow authentically and start and stop projects in a way that suits them perfectly.

Today Devin finished his Engine. He was so proud. So much learning took place on a time table that was completely catered to what he wanted to know, when he was ready to learn it. This is genuine, free-range learning! I am so grateful to be able to give our children this incredible gift!

I love this life!

Hidden Pictures

The kids absolutely love any type of "Find a Picture" book. We must have every I Spy book ever made.
Here they are looking at a book containing tons of pictures to find. They must have layed on the floor for over an hour together searching for hidden pictures. It is one of the passions that they share and can enjoy together.

Chinese Folk Dancing

Last night we attending a performance by the Chinese Dance Troupe. It was absolutely amazing! The drums were so loud Ivy said they sounded like "fireworks". The Dragon dance was spectacular. We all learned so much about the Chinese culture watching the show and taking part in the interactive workshop afterward. It was a very special night that we enjoyed so much together! We haven't stopped talking about it. Devin now wants to get a drum and Chinese yo-yo. Dakota & Ivy want drums and ribbons for Chinese ribbon dancing. This experience really expanded our interests and introduced us to another culture that was so beautiful and exciting.

A Brother's Love

The girls and I were downstairs looking at Dakota's "Find a Picture" book together. Devin was upstairs, I thought in his room building with Lego's. The house was very quite and relaxing. The sun was shining through the living room window splashing sunshine on the girls and I as we looked for hidden pictures together.

Devin came downstairs with a very suspicious look on his face. He tried so hard not to smile and asked us if we wanted to come upstairs to see something "cool" he did. A few minutes later the girls and I went upstairs to see Devin waving us in to Dakota's room.

This is what we found when we looked in her room. Dakota was not amused. I couldn't help laughing out loud. Ivy just stared in silence. It didn't take long for Dakota to destroy Devin's mischievous prank. Oh the sibling love that flows through our home! (sigh)

A Visit With New Friends

The other day we were blessed with a visit from some new friends, Jess, her mother Collette and Jess's three adorable kids, who are also Unschoolers. They drove over two hours to spend the day with us, which we were so thankful for! It was a fun day of eating, sharing, playing and hiking. It was a nice, relaxing day effortlessly connecting with one another as we shared an unspoken understanding of eachother.

Jess and Collette surprised me with the most thoughtful gift! They searched in 7 stores before they found my beloved Lime Starburst! I was blown away and could barely hold back the tears. It wasn't so much the candy (which was awesome), it was that they cared enough to do something like this for me that made me feel so special, understood and loved. I have enough Lime Starburst now to take me through this pregnancy and many months postpartum. I am so thankful to have such great people in my life!

Collette started the first Unschooling Yahoo group for grandparents http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GrandLEAP
She is providing a much needed resource to parents of Unschooling families for them to learn more about our unique, amazing lives. Collette is such a beautiful, energetic, loving person. I encouraged her to lead the Grandparents discussion at the next Live and Learn Conference. My Mom led the discussion this year called, "Grandparenting A Free Child", but unfortunately my Mom can't come next year.

I really enjoyed our visit with Jess, Collette and the kids! It was a fun day together with a common thread connecting us that was so special.

Our Latest Fairy Houses

Devin had an awesome idea of hollowing out his pumpkin to make into a fairy house. It came out so cool! We made toasted pumpkin seeds too, so it was a double treat! Devin's creativity never ceases to amaze me. I love facilitating his interests and riding the waves of his passions.

I love the fairy house Dakota made too. Once you get started with one, so many ideas come to you. We have turned so many people onto fairy house building once they visit our house. Our passion for this activity is very contagious!

Still Life Drawing

The other day Devin and Dakota wanted to draw their cactus's. They tried a few different angles and mediums. I really enjoy sitting along side the kids drawing myself. It is such a connecting time without any words. We usually play relaxing music and enjoy the process of creating our own unique masterpieces together. The kids loved their finished still life drawings and we all shared and discussed what we liked best about them.

Making New Friends

We have a yearly tradition bringing the kids to Build-A-Bear Workshop. It is such a special time that we all enjoy so much! We drove to Portland, Maine on a rainy day last week.

This year was Ivy's first time making a stuffed animal and she enjoyed the process of creating her new friend, "Doggy-Dog". She loved adding the stuffing and picking out clothes. Devin and Dakota each chose to make a stuffed Ghost, being so close to Halloween.

It was a really fun time together that I will never forget.

Manifesting Candy

I love reading manifestation stories since Joe and I having been living the Law of Attraction. This little event, although seemingly small, gave me a great peek into my own capabilities to have anything I want in life.

Since the beginning of my pregnancy I have had a very specific craving. Strange perhaps, but very strong. I remember being a little girl and loving Starburst candy. Back in those days (1970's), Starburst came in 4 flavors strawberry, orange, lemon and lime. I absolutely loved the lime flavored. Well, around 1978 or so, they replaced the lime Starburst with cherry. As a child I didn't mourn the loss of my favorite flavor much. After all there was such an abundance of different kinds of candy, I got over it quickly.

Over the years I thought about the taste of those Lime Starburst. I could recall the smell and the exact shade of light green that they were. I can remember exact times when I was eating them as a child. They became part of my history, as the food of our childhood often is.

When I began craving them this pregnancy, I started researching them. I found out the whole story of why and when the lime candies were replaced. I looked on eBay for an old package of them (back when the package was white, before they changed it to yellow.) I was willing to eat a 30 year old candy.....Eww! How desperate was I??!
It was a bit of a short-lived obsession reading that all I could about Starburst history. I discussed the long lost flavor with my brother and mother asking them if they remembered my beloved Lime candy. We all laughed at this relentless craving that I was having.

I visited message boards and found out that the lime Skittles were as close to the flavor as one could get. The kids would sift through their Skittles and give me cups full of the green ones. Even Ivy, at 2 years old, would bring me a green little handful of the tiny candies to help ease my intense craving. The Skittles were nice. Not the same consistency, but a similar flavor.

I recently switched grocery stores. As I was standing in line my first trip to the new store I happened to look on a small display rack. On it was package of candythat read, "Starburst: Nostalgic Flavors". I almost passed out! As I got closer I could see that they had LIME! I started yelling at the nearest check out person, "DO you have any more of these packages?!!" She looked at me like I was totally 'out there'. She said, "I....I think so". She came back with another large package.
I pushed my groceries out to the car as fast as I could. I sat in the drivers seat and ripped open one of the bags. Starbursts flew everywhere, all over the car! I was laughing as I tore open my first Lime Love. It smelled just like I remembered! As I ate it I got goosebumps. I was transported back to my childhood and in an instant, this intense craving that I had building for years, had been satisfied. I sat in the grocery store parking lot and ate a handful more. I chewed them the whole way home. I savored every single little nugget of lime deliciousness. I called Joe from the cell phone with a mouth full and yelled, "Joe your not going to believe this!" I proceeded to tell him the story.....

I truly believe that I manifested the Lime Starburst into my reality. I held such an intention...such a desire. They were put there for me! Although a small manifestation, it was one that I will never, ever forget in my entire life.

I have eaten enough of the Lime candies to last me a lifetime! I have shared them with my family, who also enjoyed them. (Although they don't know what all the fuss was about.)

Here I am with Ivy and my last few Lime Starburst on my pregnant belly.

I have never seen those Nostalgia Starbursts in the grocery store again. I now know however, that no matter what I want in my life, if I hold the intention with enough passion, with enough focus, with enough desire..... I will receive it.

Nights in the Woods

We are blessed to live on 45 acres of family land. We have spent a great deal of time out in the middle of the woods lately. Fall is a time that there are virtually no bugs and the temperature is just perfect to spend much of our waking hours outside exploring.

The other night after dinner we hung out in the forest cuddling and talking as the kids built a tee pee. We listened to the nights sounds and enjoyed the peaceful, relaxing time together. I wouldn't change a thing about our lives. I could cry sometimes at how much love we have between us all. I am so gratefu,l every waking moment, for the amazing life that Joe, the kids and I have co-created together.
